Nowadays, with our busy lives and so many people have so much to do and so many things happening around us, it's hard to find friends.
So we wanted to know, as people start using these AI companions more and more to fill this gap of needing friends and being lonely, what does that do to their mental well-being?
And I think this is a really important question to ask.
Yeah, so what we saw in our research, basically what we tried to do is to go beyond just looking at one static picture of what's happening.
Like you might have just started using them and I might ask you, how is it?
And it might be very exciting and nice.
But our goal was to go look at things over time, people who have been using these AI companions for a couple of years, and see how that long-term use has impacted them.
And what we saw is actually there are these different phases that exist, like any kind of real-world friendship that in the beginning you might meet someone, you might be very excited, and there's this phase that you're trying to learn.
about one another and you maybe are trying to show all your good aspects to your friend and talk about it, like giving them a lot of attention.
Exactly.
And then as things progress, you have a deeper bond, but also some problems might start to surface.
And this is exactly the case also with AI companions.
So as people start using them or being in touch with them more and more, they start sharing more with them, sharing more deeper things, deeper thoughts with them.
And then at some point, we see that some problems start to emerge.
Some people who originally were really feeling less lonely because they found this companion, they start feeling more lonely, lonelier than before.
Or they start showing some signs of distress in the way they express themselves and all that.
And basically, our research shows that as people... So in the beginning, they really liked these interactions because there are a lot of times it's really hard to find a friend.
In general, we know that in the world, loneliness is becoming a very, very big problem.
Not just for older people, which typically are like kind of known to be lonelier.
Now younger people, research shows that are also feeling very lonely.
