Some Protestants, like those in Episcopal, Lutheran, or other congregations, also mark the day.

In recent years, there's been an uptick in churches that offer ashes to go in parking lots, airport chapels, and commuter rail stations, with clergy offering ashes to busy workers and others who might want to participate in the ritual but don't have time to get to a church.

Lent lasts for 40 days, minus the Sundays, and leads up to Easter observances.

Emergency legislation signed by Democratic Governor Wes Moore outlaws agreements that allow detention centers to screen inmates to see if they're in the U.S.

illegally.

Nine Maryland jurisdictions have them in place, and some have pushed back on the ban.

Moore said it's about constitutional policing and discussed the growing size of ICE.

He said ICE is the largest law enforcement agency in America.

Some local law enforcement officials are worried that without the agreements in place, there could be more ICE enforcement in the state.
