And in fact, since 2018, a bunch of cities and states have been designing and implementing these laws connected to pay scale transparency.

Absolutely.
So why now publicly?
We've reported that younger generations are more open about pay than previous generations have been.
And from your story, it sounds like this is true for you.
You're a millennial.

I wonder if this experience has prompted you to think at all about why we don't talk about these things more openly.

Americans really tend to define themselves by their work and by extension, the number on their paycheck.
