And he didn't care about Oxley or Pauline Hanson.

He said, we're not going to win that seat anyway.

I've dealt with Pauline Hanson.

I'm an anti-racist.

And we have disendorsed her as a liberal.

So don't vote for Pauline Hanson if you live in Oxley.

But what he'd forgotten to realise is the ballot papers had already been printed.

And so the Liberal had said, Pauline Hanson, and she was disendorsed by the Liberal Party, but on the ballot paper, it still said, Pauline Hanson, Liberal.

Now that was handy because, well, firstly, she got all this national publicity, firstly for saying, Aborigines are getting too much welfare.

And then John Howard's disendorsed her.

Very, you know, it's a very nasty thing for a very senior politician to say to somebody who was just a humble fish and chip shop owner, you're a racist.

We are so racist, we're going to kick you out of the Liberal Party.

So then on election night, very happy night for the Liberal Party.

And we're looking up at the screen and an independence won the seat of Oxley.

And it was like a big deal.

So she's won, right?

Now, then she didn't know anything about federal politics.

She'd been following it.

I've got a mate who's actually, I've just got to know him quite well.

He used to go to her fish and chip shop and he told me that she used to rave on about politics all the time when she's serving fish and chips to the people.
