What did I enjoy most about my time with the Red Sox?
what really resonated was you know i love i love being a gm everything about it because i'm like super competitive so i love the competition and i love being part of a team so i love being you know in that front office you get where it's close upstairs as you guys are downstairs and also feeling connected to you guys the team in the clubhouse so i knew i wanted to keep doing that but ultimately the part that really resonated the most with me was getting the you know sacrificing with
my guys shoulder to shoulder and feeling like I played a small part in something that really mattered to a ton of people.
Obviously the 04 World Championship in Boston, not having won in 86 years, it just, it moved so many people and to play a small part in bringing joy to people just made me feel so good and made me feel part of something bigger than myself.
And looking around baseball, I was like, where else could you ever get that feeling again?
Like, where is there a mission that big that's still out there?
So obviously Chicago,
not having one in over 100 years was the place that was crying out.
There's so many parallels between the Cubs and the Red Sox and that season when that job became available.
And the way everything happened at the end of our season and the Cubs came after me was just doing like a self-inventory.
And I've always had this rule that after about 10 years someplace, you should look for something else to go do, both for your own benefit to expand your horizons, challenge yourself, kind of start fresh, but also for the benefit of the organization so you don't get stale.
They don't get stale.
They can get fresh eyes in there.
And it had been 10 years with the Red Sox, and it was just time.
And when the Cubs came after me, I thought, wow, here's a chance to take all the lessons I learned in Boston through, as you said, I was 28 when I got that job.
So I got so many things wrong, but I learned so much along the way.
I was kind of making it up as I went along there.
Hadn't ever led anything in my life, not even like a lemonade stand.
No business school classes or anything.
Kind of like figured out how to lead, figured out how to manage, figured out how to bring people together.
