It was just, if you had a basic understanding of like how the numbers could help you project the guy's performance going forward, it was like shooting fish in a barrel.
So my default at the time was like, yes, I cared about who players are as people.
I cared about character and how to put teams together.
But in the end, like I was gonna come back to the numbers and something had to make sense by the numbers.
And then over time,
just being in clubhouses and seeing which teams overachieved, which teams underachieved, which teams came through when it mattered most, which teams were torn apart from the inside.
We had it all in my time at Boston, from coming back down 0-3 to the Yankees to the fried chicken and beer fiasco in 2011.
I saw every side of it.
And I just came to realize that, you know, the human being, the character, the person, beyond just what the spreadsheet projects for future performance, really matters.
I know it's cliche, like, yeah, you know, if chemistry were so important, then you would just build a team based on great guys.
No, obviously talent matters, but how the pieces fit together.
I mean, I get frustrated when people say, like,
It doesn't, you know, chemistry doesn't really matter.
You know, ultimately it's just, it's just a talent that wins out.
Cause I asked them like.
People look at winning teams and then they're reductive and they say, oh, they had good chemistry.
