So coming out of those meetings, we had, you know, like a 300 page manual we ended up writing up called the Cubs away that that was a big part of the blueprint.

And it was going to be unique and different than what we did in Boston because different market, different fan bases and different challenges that we face.

Well, I

look back a little bit and you're talking about like in a day and age right now that's just kind of side note like you put a lot of emphasis on the character of the play like you brought in a lot of

good character guys.

Does that come from your time in baseball learning?

Yeah, that came from learning from a lot of great people and then my own personal evolution.

I was lucky enough to have a great mentor in San Diego, Kevin Towers, who unfortunately we lost him many years ago now.

But he was a hot young GM at the time and he had a scouting background and he understood people

incredibly well.

And so he well, he he saw that like a hole in my resume and not having played professionally was like maybe I didn't have the scouting side down.

So he taught me how to scout, took me out all around Southern California and got us with the draft and taught me how to scout.

But even more importantly, he'd bring me down to the clubhouse with him.

and teach me how players really think and what really goes on behind the scenes and what really matters in the clubhouse.

So that was huge for me to get that understanding.

But even so, because my background was just as much in analytics and numbers and kind of being out front on that side of the game,

When I first got to the Red Sox, I did really emphasize analytics.

And it was so easy back then to get a competitive advantage just by using some really basic modeling and basic analytics.

I mean, my first off-season with the Red Sox, we signed David Ortiz for $1.25 million one year.
