Like, I wanted to come, like, you know, we built some teams around some core principles, like controlling the strike zone on both sides of the ball.
Like, I knew when we got to Chicago, like, hey, we're going to try to be a disciplined team that dominates the strike zone as an offense, and we're going to get pitchers who have good stuff but pound the zone.
Just certain, like, core big baseball principles.
But one thing that we didn't want to do
And I felt it was important not to do, was just show up in Chicago with this kind of outsized reputation, because it was a big deal when I came in.
People were expecting, oh, this guy's going to come in with all the answers.
And Chicago is different than Boston.
So I didn't want to just roll out the same playbook that we had in Boston and Chicago and expect it to work.
For one thing, it would have been super arrogant.
It would have not shown like an awareness of the uniqueness of the market and the fan base that every situation is different.
So like the first thing we did when I got to Chicago, we held organizational live meetings with like every scout, every coach.
Everyone in baseball operations every analyst in Mesa.
We spent like four days getting together and Together like deciding what's the Cubs way gonna be how how do we want to play baseball?
How do we want to teach baseball?
We spent a day on hitting and like hitting philosophy and what we want to emphasize how we want to teach it like at every level including the big leagues and
A day on pitching, a day on defense and base running, and then a day on makeup.
What kind of players we wanted, what did we want to stand for, what kind of values.
And yes, I gave a big speech and talked about the vision and talked about controlling the strike zone and set that vision of what we're trying to become, like five-year plan, become the best organization in baseball, win a World Series, all that.
but how we're going to get there that was going to come from like the collective wisdom of everyone in the room and it uh it wasn't going to be the same playbook in Boston so we kept everyone that we inherited in Chicago for at least a year and you know to give everyone a chance to be part of what we were building and then also to get the institutional knowledge and you know you don't want to just get rid of people when you show up somewhere new and there were some great people who knew a ton about how to win
and how to develop players and also about Chicago and what works in Chicago and what doesn't.
