So they have some control, but your hope is that they will still do reading and begin to learn that process.

No, because play, I absolutely believe in the importance of play.

That's where children learn, I suppose, those soft skills.

We talk about creating great humans, which Liz does at her centre, but that's what play does.

It teaches turn-taking, sharing, communication, creativity.

And that happens just naturally in play.

Children where English is their second language, that's where they begin to learn that conversational language.

It's just so important.

But I also see the...

the importance of teaching children to read and write and teach them their maths.

And what I have seen in the last few years that we've been doing it is having those high expectations of children coming in.

We might look at a child and we might go, that child is struggling to sit on the mat for more than a couple of minutes.

That's okay.

We want you to sit there for two minutes while we begin the day, and then they can go and play quietly with the Lego.

It doesn't mean they're not listening and learning.

And when you're explicitly teaching them, like if we're going through the letter sounds, it is so funny because often that child at the back will yell out what the sound is because they're still learning, but they need to be doing things with their hands, and that's where we're at.

You know, I was talking to my teachers and it's that idea that over time we increase that, OK, we're going to try and sit on the mat for five minutes or we're going to try and do two lines of handwriting.
