But if they can have longer in year zero where you're focused on those foundational skills, it does pay dividends in the end.
Thankfully, I'm not a teacher.
It is hard, but then you'll also have children that will start at the same time and the same week, and they have really different levels of readiness.
And skilled teachers will go, I recognise that this is what this child needs to be helped with to get to that next step.
They're scaffolded.
You know what their next step is.
Skilled new entrant teachers will go, actually, I can see this group of children are ready to begin reading.
This is what they know.
These children, we need to work more on those foundational skills.
But, oh, look, they're there now.
Right, off we go.
So you are constantly doing that.
And it's just part of the job, I think.
So what I would say, we've probably been doing it for six years.

The results that we – I suppose there's two things.
It was funded by our school and our board before the government funded it, and we spent a lot of money as a school investing in excellent coaching and working alongside professionals because actually it's a real skill in the way you teach.
And so what I think is it has taken all that time,
to actually get skilled at it in reading and writing and spelling and to be able to recognise what children need.
What I see across the school is I see we've got some amazing spellers, we've got some great writing happening in our school, and I can remember when we first looked at it, and to be honest, being shocked at some of our very clever kids whose spelling was...
