We inherit this idea that this person wasn't a real friend because we're not still friends.
You know, that didn't really matter as much or it didn't count.
And I think this is a real problem, actually.
I really want to look at those overlooked kinds of friendships and say, well, those are really important parts of our lives.
You know, they really help us navigate a problem at a particular time.
They help us become the person that we need to be at that particular moment.
We solve problems together.
We enjoy each other's company.
That's very valid.
I remember talking to a mum friend at the school gates and she was worried that she didn't really have any proper friends, that all of her friends were what she called friendships of convenience.
So they were friends that she saw at the school gates or they were just in the local community and that that somehow didn't count because they hadn't become a proper friend.
And I do recognise this feeling, but I also would say to that person, we are your friends, we do care about you.
And also those friendships are, OK, they might not be a lifelong best friend, but they are friendships that are giving...
that person a certain sense of community, camaraderie, meaning, fun.
I think you're absolutely right.
I think that that's exactly how to see it.
I mean, for friends who you've been friends with forever because you were at school together and you might see each other or even speak on the phone or whatever once every few years even, you know,
Those friendships are so valuable, aren't they?
Because your friends are a sort of memory box.
They kind of have a version of you from the past in mind.
