And when you see each other, you're able to reminisce, you're able to be that person for a brief moment that you once were and remember who they were for them.
This is a very important thing.
And then there are other friends which are quite positive
practical friends that we might be making through work, for example.
And again, we might think, oh, well, they're not really proper friends because our version of friendship these days is really about leisure time.
You know, are you going to choose to spend time together outside of work or outside of some shared obligation you're doing?
Yeah, humans are famously very social animals and we need each other.
We need to cooperate.
We need each other for security.
We need to trust one another in order to make things happen.
Friendship is part of that.
Friendship is the emotional glue that keeps us together.
There was a really interesting meta-analysis in 2010
where you draw together a range of studies that suggested that there was 50% increased likelihood of survival for people with stronger social bonds.
I mean, that seemed incredible to me, 50%.
So having a close and secure social network increases your ability to recover from illness, it reduces your stress, it allows for things like...
oxytocin, endorphins when we laugh together.
So there are physiological benefits to friendship.
But also, I think it's really important to emphasize that, you know, with our friends, we solve problems together.
You know, we share information between friends.
