That's nice.
You're saying, I do care about you.
I care about this friendship.
I'm just really, really busy, you know, and that's a nice thing to do.
I mean, for me, assurance is a much lower bar.
I just might text someone and say, you popped into my mind, you know, how are you doing?
And if I know someone's very busy, I say, there's no need to reply.
I just wanted to say hi, you know.
Oh, what a gift.
No need to reply.
No need to reply.
No need to reply.
The other thing that can really help is kinds of rituals.
So if you've got a friendship that really matters to you, you really want to keep that friend, then having certain things that you often do together can really help cement it, particularly if your lives have become very, very different.
And then the last thing is really important for keeping a friend is kind of openness.
Friendship is really about trust.
So if we can be relatively willing to share, it doesn't have to be huge, but, you know, share something of our life, be open about our life with our friend, then that's one way of building trust with them and just keeping that friendship feeling meaningful.
Well, that's really what the book is about.
But one of the ways I resolved it was, well, two things.
One was by really understanding my perhaps rather elevated expectations of what a friendship should look like and where those ideas had come from.
