Like my job was to write the book and then I'm the expert on like South Asian culture, the way that I'm explaining it as well as like Muslim culture.
And her job is to make sure the book is the best it can possibly be.
My job too, but you know, she's the editor.
And so she would, her suggestions were things like, I think any editor, because I've worked with several, would say like, deepen this relationship.
Do you need this character?
Is this plotline redundant?
You know, like this, this emotional moment is too short or too long.
The stuff that it's more big picture, it's big picture, you know, and she left, she left the rest of it to me.
She never said, Oh, you need to explain what like, for instance, what Brianna is, or you need to not explain what Brianna is and let people Google it.
She never did that.
That's not really an editor's job.
But I think one of the reasons why she's such a good editor is because she let me cook.
You know, she let me literally, not to be punny, but she let me cook.
And that was kind of a conversation that evolved over the course of my drafting of my books.
And it's, I think, evolved in publishing too.
There are definitely books out there that are set in other communities that have like a glossary at the end where they explain, you know, what this word is or the beginning, you know, characterless.
And I think that's really useful.
Personally, I skip over glossaries.
I don't really care because I want to be so immersed in a book.
