Oh my God.

For many, many years from 2010 to 2017, when it was finally, uh, acquired by HarperCollins, um,

A lot of times I was writing the book for myself over the course of those years because I needed to almost manifest this story, this unapologetic romance that only features Muslim characters for myself because I'm a huge reader.

I'm your classic bookworm.

I'm always reading three books and listening to another one on audio.

And I really wanted a book that kind of reflected my reality, the way that, as you said, like, what does a modern arranged marriage look like?

And what are some of like the courting rituals of an observant Muslim family?

Or what are some of the clothing that like a like a Hyderabadi Indian family would wear and the food that they would eat?

I was writing all that for myself.

And I, of course, wanted to be published.

But I was like, I don't know if that's even possible because...

I, you know, especially in Canada, like I haven't seen books like this published.

So it was a real gamble, but it was almost like putting what I wanted to see out in the world.

I, I couldn't find it.

So I had to go and make it myself.

And, and I've heard from so many people who are either part of the South Asian community or the Muslim community, and also lots of other children of immigrants.

And, and also people, people like you, Jacob, or just like white French Canadians were like, this was so interesting.

Yeah.

Or thank you for making this because I'm not your culture, but I also have similar practices that may seem like different to the mainstream.

And I never want... And the way I wrote it is I didn't want it to be like an exotic thing.
