It's heartbreaking.

And I think hearing her, like I said, through that child voice describing things that we as adults can recognise exactly what she's describing, whether it's, you know, what's happening in that bedroom or when someone is maybe perhaps being unkind to her or saying certain things.

And she's questioning, well, why did they do that?

Or why do the people in my village say a girl must marry at this age, but the boys can keep going to work?

I love hearing her question her way through this book.

And that fight is relentless all the way till the end.

I had to put the book down at some moments, even though I've read it before.

But the level of description that Abidari puts in this, when Odini's describing certain moments, I'm like, I need to cry for it.

Let me put this down for a second.

Yeah.

You really saw so many themes come up.

The theme of how women are treated if they are not able to give birth or maybe they don't want children.

difference between boys and girls and that treatment between who can go to school who can't and like you said the wealth disparity the way that she describes how she's grown up what she sees once she is married is that a spoiler I don't know once she's married what she witnesses in that home which is slightly better off than where she was with her father but that now when she gets to Lagos the way she describes this big city what she can see and what happens at big madam's house like beyond the treatment she receives there just

How she's living, she's like, wow, I have my own bedroom.

I have all these different things happening for me.

And the shock in her helps to reveal that wealth disparity and how different people are treated.

My favourite part was when Miss Tia teaches her how to speak internally to herself kindly, no matter what is happening in that room.

If she's been beaten or anything of that nature, she says, you keep telling yourself that you're worthy.

And I think that is where my tears came back.

It does inspire you to want to, you know, fight for things for yourself.
