I have one piece of advice for you.
Sleep your way to the top.
One of the ways that they undermined the safety net was to carve independent contractors out of the laws.
And Truman, who was president at the time, actually vetoed these carve-outs.
And he said, if we allow for this to move forward, then insurance salesmen, taxi drivers, real estate agents, none of these people will benefit from the protections.
And the Congress overrode his veto and they passed.
But at the time, most of the economy was organized around manufacturing.
So you had these like
nine to five job.
You would go into a place and work and the economy was organized in this way.
In the late to mid-70s, this started to change in many places.
You saw companies come forward and say, hey, if we reorganize how we pay our workers, could we consider them to be independent contractors?
And courts largely said yes.
But it was kind of a niche question, right?
Like, unless you were in construction or doing advocacy around nail salon workers, you wouldn't really care.
Like, people were employees.
Once again, you had these companies come in and take great advantage of this moment.
They were like, we can do things differently where you can be your own boss.
You can use your own assets.
You have to work for the man.
