And a lot of people were like, yeah, this is the way to go.
It's called the sharing economy.
There was a labor movement.
There was a women's movement that inculcated these ideas that we all internalize.
The practices of these companies over the last decade is slowly undoing these ideals in the minds of, I think, a new generation.
I've done research interviewing these folks and they'll say, well, the full-time employees are doing the exact same work that I am doing on the exact same team.
But because I got hired through a temp agency, I have much lower wages.
I have no benefits.
They don't have any security of employment.
And then what happens is that once the project that they're working on ends...
they are fired and gone.
The full-time employee is just put on a different project.
And the reason that they do this keeps labor costs really low.
It's also an anti-unionization technique.
As a third matter, they don't have to report these layoffs.
You have to tell federal and state entities if you're letting off loads of people.
That signals to your shareholders that something is wrong.
So if they're hiring everyone through temp agencies, then all of that goes away.
In the U.S., we have this cultural assumption that we should have equal pay for equal work.
And I always get questions from students who are like, maybe that's not the right cultural assumption.
