I am Alicia Brown.
I'm the founder and executive director of For the Struggle and the managing partner of Justice and Action Law Center.
Um I'm speaking tonight because
What we've heard from the community with respect to this curfew is that criminalization is not the answer, resources is in fact the answer.
And the fact that investing in resources to alleviate this problem was not the initial response is concerning, at least.
Let's be honest, you all have heard and we've already acknowledged that this ordinance will have a disproportionate impact on black and brown children.
That is something that we already know.
We know what's happened in the past, and we know what will continue to happen even with this particular ordinance.
What's even more concerning is criminalizing parents for children engaging in children activities and children behavior.
We work with parents every single day, low-income parents, struggling every single day.
And the idea of criminalizing a parent for a child's activity is not only concerning, but it shows me that whoever wrote this ordinance is completely out of touch.
We do not support a blanket nine p.m.
curfew as proposed.
If an immediate measure is necessary, it should be temporary.
And the attorney in me needs to say it needs to be narrowly tailored and evaluated alongside non-criminal alternatives.
After speaking with our youth, um again.
Criminalization under these circumstances is unrealistic and it's not the answer.
