At the moment, Kenjen is currently generating 754 megawatts.
This used to be 799, sometimes up to 2023 megawatts.
But due to modernization of Volcarion 1, the oldest geothermal power plant in Africa, to upgrade the capacity, there was a drop of 45 megawatts.
This is expected to come on board again.
And the capacity is even going to be enhanced because we will see an increase in capacity from the initial 45 megawatts now to 63 megawatts.
That's an additional 18 megawatts.
Geothermal energy is very important for Kenya, particularly in the entire national energy mix.
Number one, because geothermal energy provides reliable baseload power.
That is, these power plants, they're able to run 24-7.
Unlike the variable renewable energy sources, power plants, that is power plants of wind, hydro and solar.
Of course, we know hydros are affected by weather fluctuations.
Wind and solar both are intermittent.
It depends on the availability of wind and solar depends on the availability of the sun.
But we notice for geothermal because this uses the naturally occurring heat in the earth.
So geothermal power plants, they are able to provide continuous high-capacity power throughout, not unless the power plants are under maintenance.
So this is a vehicle that, like a vehicle which can move thousands and thousands of kilometers without stopping.
It is indigenous, it is locally occurring, it's a locally available resource, and also it is green, in that the greenhouse gases which are produced by geothermal plants
are at very minimal level.
So it helps to reduce the carbon footprint.
Currently, geothermal represents about 30% of the entire national energy mix.
