You're making the decision to retire.
You're not getting the choice around where you want to put that seven-year period of benefits.
And you then still have to wait before you get that choice later on.
And so it's not...
a situation where if you're retiring now that you will necessarily get your finalised McLeod choice and your finalised benefits.
And what that means is it has a knock-on effect for any doctors who have personal pensions out there and who want to look at taking tax-free cash.
I don't want to be too complicated about that, but if there are any doctors who are listening and who took pension benefits under the old lifetime allowance regime...
which was in place, remember, until April 2024, and who have personal pensions that they want to access, it's really important that they take advice, get help before they make the decision to access that because they might need something called a transitional tax-free amount certificate in order to be able to access that tax-free cash properly.
And they can't get that until their finalised McLeod choice is made.
So it has all these knock-on impacts on our doctors, sadly.
You obviously need someone like yourself.
So one thing we can all, I think, categorically agree on is that the NHS pension is not straightforward.
They love to be complicated and it can feel really overwhelming.
And then it's probably tempting to go, right, well, I'll look at that another time.
Please don't.
So I would encourage everybody to just go and find an advisor that you connect with.
You know where Wesleyan are and they're all over the UK and obviously all of our advisors are specialised and know about the NHS pension.
Connect with your local advisor and ask them about your pension.
Just let them do that side of it for you because they're very well used to explaining things simply and clearly.
And the one thing that I don't want anybody doing is going, right, my colleague did this or my other partner in my practice did that.
