It is feasible to go your entire life without ever expressing a single emotion just in case you didn't mean it.
And I think that's another thing that I do love about this book, that maybe we can say something about this in relation to poetry.
It's epigrammatic quality.
It can be a problem in writing comic prose because
it's a bit like having a rhyme at the end of poems too often.
You're trying to land a thought too much.
If everything kind of devolves into an epigram the whole time, it can get wearisome.
But you seem to sort of get away with it.
Damn you.
But it's interesting though, isn't it?
Because when you write, are you aware of... I think I am aware when I write that I have to cross a lot out.
Not just because they're not terribly good sentences, but also because I don't want to close the thought too much.
I want to leave it open.
How does one do that?
How do you juggle nailing something and leaving it open?
And I think... I mean, you consciously look for sort of new ways of being formal in poetry that haven't quite been done before.
I mentioned my favourite collection, which is Kane.
And in Kane, which is this sort of...
large-scale riff on the Cain story in the Bible.
There are, I think, 30 or so poems in the middle that are anagrams of a number of verses in the Bible.
