I'm just going to gratuitously read out a couple of marvelous things.
It's great to talk about the book and the ideas behind it, but I do want to underline the fact that this is superlatively well-written.
again, a very difficult thing to do in comic prose because you want to obey plausible rhythms of actual speech and thought.
And in order to do that, sometimes one can get quite demotic and therefore it won't be considered as something literary.
This is superbly well written.
Here's a couple of lines about Claudio the flatmate.
Claudio is like the scion of a great arable farmer
who lets the family business disintegrate while he plays a farming simulator in the room above the tithe barn.
But then it turns out that arable farming is falling apart anyway, and the future is in watching people play farming simulators.
And this, this is marvelous.
This is after a very brilliant not-quite-sex scene.
Is it not the case that for most of my life I have felt like I have just put a large crisp in my mouth during what turns out to be a quiet and pivotal scene in a play?
And one more.
Yes, this moving scene with the parents who are sort of Stonehenge men-ears.
Men-ears, that's a good word.
There's a very lovely couple of lines.
Not so obviously comic, but extremely touching.
