You're an unusual writer because you have this sort of very benign view that people should be largely let alone.

And I think that's quite unusual for a writer because the act of writing is frankly a little predatory.

Do you think you're, though, idiosyncratic and humiliated or humiliating?
Because the older I get, I just think I'm quite boring.
I just think there's a sort of vanity attached to saying, you know, you are this Craven sort of individual.
So at the end of the book, not wanting to give too much away, but there's a sort of a successful thing happens.
And in that sense, it's very, you know, a comedy sort of has to resolve in that way.
One might argue if you look at it as a, you know, an orthodox dramatic comedy.
But how...
This Englishness you've just mentioned, I'm trying to make a point here that I think we find it, we're easily embarrassed still, I think, as a culture, and embarrassment is important to our comedy.
Do you think it's possible to be, and I think this is a serious question that the book asks, is it, can one be competitively successful?
Can one come out on top and be kind at the same time?
