They found out actually what happened was
So normally when you dive in or have any sort of neck injury and your spinal column gets compressed, it crushes the vertebrae, which crushes your spinal cord.
But for some miraculous reason, mine exploded outwards and my spinal...
cord was essentially like very very badly bruised on one side i was still paralyzed my neck down on both sides of my body but when the vertebrae is exploded outwards it severed arteries in my neck which caused the stroke at least one stroke and that was another point where you know i flatline they
Wanted, I think, to do the surgery at that point, but it was really it was my option, like because the other option would have been, you know, have a halo for six months or however long it was.
And I don't remember picking or choosing, but I guess I said surgery.
And I know the odds weren't great.
There was experimental technology at that time being used, which is basically like a live MRI.
Actually, the surgery was they fused my spinal column back together and they cut out a piece of my hip to rebuild my spinal column with that bone.
There's a tiny, tiny bit of metal, but my spinal column was actually rebuilt from a piece of my pelvis that they cut out.
The surgery definitely gave me better odds.
Okay.
But it was kind of just like, you have to do one or the other.
Like, you're not going to walk.
This isn't going to help you walk again.
But we can't leave your spinal cord exposed like that.
It's like the halo is essentially like a cast where like...
The bone tissue would heal around it.
Not perfectly, but it would be something to just provide a little bit of protection.
The prognosis was still quadriplegia for life.
