That's one of my most difficult things.
things remaining in my recovery process because it's going to always be ongoing is just learn how to plan for the future while also being okay when it doesn't you know hopefully I've lived the worst experience I've ever had and like that part's behind me but I have to be like okay if it isn't and at least now I like
no, I have the tools to get some, get through something like that or help others get through something like that.
And there's like various coping mechanisms I used aside from the drugs to kind of like try to get myself to that point.
And, you know, one of the biggest thing I think is kind of just like telling this whole story out loud and like
I guess I tried to do that in a way.
Like I used to do like random open mic nights, like standup comedy, like before COVID.
And that was like kind of just like a way to like talk about my injury and like a light way.
But I think it was more so to kind of like just get people to like more aware of certain things and also like take some of like the, uh,
taboo away from it specifically like hemiplegia like there's a lot of things that like are adapted to for paraplegic people but hemiplegic people is like not so much like if i'm at like a cocktail function or like a work thing and like i'm holding something like a drink in my right hand and like
I have to, like, think ahead of, like, I'm, like, constantly aware of, like, where there's, like, a table I could put something down.
Like, I have to shake somebody's hand.
And, like, that's something I'm, like, constantly thinking about because I can't, like, transfer it to my left hand.
And just, like, little things like that.
Like, one of my jokes in my stand-up comedy routine is, like,
you know, like, I eventually, like, I was in, like, a motorized wheelchair that, like, first I would use with my breath, and then I could use, like, my right hand, but then, like, they had me just, like, the standard rolly ones, and I was, like, I mostly just traveled in circles, because, like, yeah, like, I could only move my right arm and my right leg, because they don't really have an adaptive device for someone who has hemiplegia to get around.
I also got
outcast from the paraplegic like basketball team at the hospital i was at in chicago they like approached me to join and i was like i had like movement in my right leg but i was just in like a standard wheelchair and like they saw me move my right leg and they're like oh like sorry like
you can't join us.
And it's like one thing to be like, kind of like discriminated against, but it's another thing to be discriminated against by a group that was formed because they were discriminated against.
