The relationship wasn't going as well as I thought.
I sort of saw some little cracks in the
in the sides of it and thought, oh, I'm not sure about this.
So I made the call to end it and in that period I'd gone from wanting to be a journalist, you know, a newspaper journalist, a writer, to getting involved with community radio and all of a sudden my whole life shifted gears and that part of my life took off.
Oh, so long.
The radio thing was like a total, I guess, happy accident.
I was hanging out with a friend of mine who was a couple of years older and he was at university and he just said to me one night when we were just hanging out, oh, I've got to go do my radio show.
Do you want to come?
I was like, oh, yeah, I'm not doing anything.
You know, remember when you're 18 and you've got all the time in the world?
This sounds fun.
Yeah.
No responsibilities, maybe a part-time job.
So I went along with him and just hung out in the studio and I was like, oh, this looks like fun.
And then the next week I said, oh, can I come back with you again?
And then I just kept on going back and it was a station called SRAFM, which is now SynFM.
and I just became involved with their volunteer test broadcasts.
So I became broadcast there and I volunteered as part of the executive and was there when they were applying to get a permanent licence and we got a permanent licence.
And through that made some of my longest ever friends, like my lifelong friends, people that I'm still very close to to this day.
And community radio was kind of where it all began for me and I just had such a passion for that.
