facilitating people who can be in incredibly difficult circumstances under a lot of pressure, mentally, financially, and it's giving them, you know, that little bit of extra time to make that life-altering decision that people, you know, there have been testimonies of people who regret decisions that they've made, and it's just giving them a little pause, the three days, just three days, a little bit of time,
Well,
I think it's a limited period of time and so I think that it's important to preserve that for the people who will avail of that option to sort of change their mind and you know appreciate that time so yes people are they're already in a situation perhaps of stress and pressure so it's not adding three months to that it's only three days and and
I think that, you know, I think as a society we should be putting our resources into helping women to choose life.
I think some of the figures have been raised during this conversation already about how much is thrown into abortion, but what about, you know,
kind of policies enacted by the government to help women financially, to help them with supports that they need so that they really feel that they can make a choice that's not mandated by maybe financial pressures or the lack of support by a partner or whatever else.
Well, yeah, I think I was making the point that as a society, we value at a very...
basic level the importance of being able to change one's mind that one's mind can be changed on these much smaller decisions and yet this is a decision of much greater magnitude as i pointed out it involves a third party and i think it's a particularly significant one where people should really have the time to consider whether this is a course that they really want to take
Yes, I think we should keep it, Karen.
And, you know, I just wanted to make one point there.
You have lots of people talking about various research and the issue of abortion and mental health problems after abortion came up.
And I just want to be clear, research over many years has made it clear that women are at higher risk of mental health problems after abortion.
And last year, the latest in a long line of publications added more evidence to that, which was a Canadian study published in Science Direct, which is a study of over 1.2 million people
which showed mental health, the hospitalisation rates are higher after abortion than deliveries.
So I just wanted to say that because it's important that people would have that information.
I suppose the main reason why I would be, if you look at what's underpinning the Sinn Féin Bill, what's underpinning some of the contributors to your programme as well, is recommendations made by Marie O'Shea, who was author of the three-year review of the abortion law,
And when Marie O'Shea went in before the Oireachtas Health Committee, where she was called before them back in 2023 to discuss her review, she was asked straight out if she had spoken to any of the women, the many women who have used that three days to change their minds.
So had she spoken to any woman who'd had a baby after that three-day period, who had decided not to go ahead, and she admitted that she hadn't, and she relied on research from UNPAC, and in that research also,
no woman was spoken to who had used that three-day wait.
That's right.
