Who is Adam Metz and what is his background before becoming CEO of Orrstown Bank?

Evan Sparks 0:05
From the American Bankers Association, this is the ABA Banking Journal podcast. Welcome back. I'm Evan Sparks, and I'm delighted to be joined today by Adam Metz. Adam is the newly appointed president and chief executive officer at Boarstown Bank up in central Pennsylvania. And Adam, I'm really delighted to have you on the show. Thank you so much for joining me.
Adam Metz 0:25
Thank you, Adam.
Evan Sparks 0:27
So I'd love it if you could give us a little bit of an introduction. I know you've been with the bank in other executive roles for a number of years, but tell me a little bit about your background and your story as a banker.
Adam Metz 0:37
Yeah, I've been essentially a community banker for a little over 30 years now. And the last nearly 10 of those years have been here at Orrstown Bank. Came over as the chief lending officer, migrated to the chief revenue officer, and most recently the chief operating officer.

What is Orrstown Bank’s relationship‑driven strategy and target markets?

Adam Metz 0:55
And now the CEO. And super excited. We have an incredibly strong foundation here. We're a hundred plus year company that services South Central Pennsylvania and the greater Maryland market.
Evan Sparks 1:09
So yeah, I'd love to learn a little bit more about Orrstown Bank. Are there areas where you have a special focus on in your lending and your business model and your strategy beyond the, obviously the geographic market you already mentioned, but just tell me a little bit more about your strategy at the bank and how that's, how that's evolved over the years you've been there.
Adam Metz 1:28
Yeah, we're a relationship-driven bank. We believe passionately that clients deserve a personal touch, and we work really hard to understand their needs. And we service all aspects of the community, various business industries in this market, including healthcare, professional services, transportation. And we also serve the greater community, various nonprofits in the area, and have a wide range of consumer products as well.
Evan Sparks 1:59
What are some of the challenges you're seeing in your markets where your bank is well positioned to help meet those needs and address those challenges for consumers, for businesses, for the local community?
Adam Metz 2:12
Yeah, I think the challenges are just being able to personally sit down with the relationship or the client and understand their needs and desires, whether that's increasing oil prices, whether that's Doge, that's Terrace, and understand their obstacles and their challenges and tailor, become a trusted advisor to that client.

Which client challenges is the bank focused on solving in its community markets?

Adam Metz 2:34
and to deliver solutions that meet their needs and the long-term growth of their companies. And as far as individuals, the same thing applies.
Evan Sparks 2:45
Can you talk a little bit about how Orrstown Bank is working to deliver new technology that helps you meet these needs, helps you get more efficient as a bank? I'm curious about how you've been able to position the bank in the technology and innovation space over the last several years as you've been there in different leadership roles.
Adam Metz 3:06
Yeah, at Horsetown, we actually have an innovation group, a team of bankers that are tasked to follow the trends within the banking space. And it's really about how do we evolve that technology and that data behind the technology to better meet our clients' needs in a more client-facing, friendly manner, but also becoming more efficient while doing so.
Evan Sparks 3:32
Yeah. What are some of the biggest things you've been able to capitalize on in that area?
Adam Metz 3:36
We're taking a strong look at AI right now and understanding that it will help us become more efficient, but also tailor solutions to the specific clients that we're serving. But I also strongly believe that banking is still a relationship model and that will always remain.
Evan Sparks 3:56
Yeah. That's one of the things I find so interesting talking with community bankers is how they

How is Orrstown’s innovation group using AI and data to improve efficiency and client service?

Evan Sparks 4:03
they are able when they're able to find the technology solutions that free up the staff time that's being spent on compliance or other or on backroom processes so that they can go out and have to build those relationships and make those sales calls or make the points of contact with individuals consumers and have more of that backroom work done in the background
