You're listening to the Art Problems Podcast, Episode 81. I'm your host, Patti Johnson. This is the podcast where we talk about how to get more shows, grants, and residencies. And in honor of Thanksgiving, today on the podcast, I want to talk about gratitude and the ways we can extend it.

And that's why today I'm dedicating this podcast to identifying some of the people I think are doing an amazing job supporting artists. But before I get to that, I'd like to extend another form of gratitude through our Vanta Black Friday sale, which like all Black Friday sales began a week before Black Friday began and ends on Monday, because that is what meaning looks like in capitalism.

So this sale exists because I want you to have access to Network at a discounted rate, which is why for three more days, you get $100 off the annual membership price, bringing it to $777 instead of $877. Just use the code Vanta24 at checkout.

And I mentioned this in the previous podcast, but I spent about six months developing all the workbooks and surveys we're using for a new goal setting for artists, which starts almost immediately upon you joining. And these sessions kick off a body of upgrades that are going to enormously impact how we help the members. This includes

It includes a new curriculum hub, assessment process, and database. So you want to lock in that price now before the price goes up. Because once you have your membership price, it never goes up, even when it will for other people. Now, back to the podcast subject. Amazing people doing amazing things with artists. The first person on this is Hannah Cole of Sunlight Tax.

127.291 - 150.514 Patti Johnson

In episode 73 of the Art Problems podcast, Accountant Hannah Cole told us about the effects of Hurricane Helene on the artist community in Asheville, which is where she lives. Since that time, she's been donating as much money as she can from the proceeds of her program, Money Bootcamp, which is specifically designed to support artists.

151.134 - 179.635 Patti Johnson

And she's using that money to further support artists affected by the hurricane. And she's helping artists apply for funding relief. She's amazing and she deserves a first spot on this list. Number two, curator John Massier of Hall Walls in Buffalo. He spoke to the Netflix membership in May or April, I think, and he spoke about how he worked with artists who had approached him for shows.

180.236 - 202.483 Patti Johnson

And when he felt the venue wasn't appropriate, he would try to place them out elsewhere. When he thought the venue was appropriate, he'd work with them to consider the space. And you could tell that he considered every square inch of the gallery space because that's how he talked about the walls. He talked about the walls, the floors, the ceiling. But my favorite moment

202.75 - 234.443 Patti Johnson

And this conversation was when a member asked him what to do when a curator doesn't respond to emails. And he said, my biggest problem is getting artists to respond to my email, which I think brings up an important point. If a curator emails you, email them back, preferably within 24 hours. Number three on our list, Luke Blackadar of VLA. He is a lawyer on the side of artists.
