The TalkDoc & Co. explore what happens to your brain during a conflict. Those “flooding,” moments in conflict are challenging…the prefrontal cortex goes offline and the sympathetic nervous system triggers fight, flight, or freeze, leading to freezing, blanking out, or saying things you don’t mean. The hosts share examples of shutting down during confrontations, becoming cold after stressful bedtime routines, reacting sharply after triggering family interactions, and going silent after receiving serious news. They discuss research linking flooding to heart-rate spikes, rising cortisol, increased emotional reactivity, and patterns shaped by attachment, plus mirror neurons and emotional contagion that make partners absorb each other’s tension. Drawing on Vygotsky, they contrast calm-brain full sentences with fight-brain fragments and overestimating what others understand. Tools include noticing flooding, naming it, taking a research-backed 20-minute pause to cool down, using agreed-upon language or code words, returning for repair, elaborating speech, and discussing these strategies outside heated moments.
Music by epidemic sound.
