David Morgan, welcome to the show. How are you? Fantastic. Thanks for having me. Absolutely. Thanks for coming on. So you have a very interesting story. You were once a shortstop, and now you're a pitcher. So what has that adjustment been like for you?
It was a little bit interesting at first. Right out the gate, I didn't really know what I was doing on the mound. I knew I had a good arm, and I knew I could throw a pretty hard basketball, so... I ended up getting an opportunity to play professional baseball, kind of put shortstop behind me. And then ever since then, 2022 and on, just really was diving into who was I going to be on the mound and what was my identity.
How did David Morgan transition from shortstop to pitcher?
That was probably the biggest struggle for me. I found my identity at shortstop. That was kind of my home. And it took a while to feel like the mound was my home. So that was probably the biggest mental struggle for me.
What challenges did David Morgan face in finding his identity on the mound?
Turning into a pressure.

So how did you overcome that? Because, I mean, sometimes the mentality is your biggest enemy, right? I mean, there's one thing is to have physical limitations. But when your mind is messing with you, like, how did you overcome that?
Yeah, I think it was just the repetitions of doing it, showing up every single day and kind of realizing that those group of guys that are going to be out there on the mound are guys I'm going to get really close with and kind of just learning from them and seeing their mistakes and seeing their success, what works for them, finding solutions. routines that worked for me and just continuing getting reps off the mountain. That was the biggest thing that helped me.
So what did your offseason look like preparing? Because, I mean, there's expectations that you are a major part of this full pad, you know, that Mason Miller obviously is the closer. I mean, what how did you prepare for that personally?
Kind of just how I did last year, you know, came into it with the mindset of having a little bit more expectations on me this year. As far as what my role is going to be or what that looks like, you know, that's not really defined for me. You know, when that phone rings and my name is called, I got to go out there and put up zeros. So that's really my mindset was find a way to go out there and put up zeros for my guys in the health of spring games.
So you grew up coming to Petco Park. You're a local guy. What does it mean to you playing for the Padres?
It's been awesome. It's a dream come true. You know, I think everyone, you know, has a dream of playing in the big leagues. But to do it where you, you know, grew up going to games is, you know, it just makes it that much more special. So it's been really, really cool for me. And, you know, I'm just excited to keep doing it.
So I'm not from here, but I absolutely love coming to Petco Park. What is, besides Petco Park, what is your favorite stadium that you've been to so far?
I always say San Francisco. Yeah, I love that place. You know, it's a little bit colder there, but I love that city. They take good care of us over there. It's a cool place to play.
So, Crick Stammen, first-year manager, well-known in the San Diego family, obviously. What kind of energy has he brought so far to this team? Obviously, it's very early on. So, what kind of vibe and energy are you seeing from him so far?
Yeah, it's been really good, really fun. You know, I got to get to know him, you know, when he was just here as a front office guy. When I signed, he was still playing for us, so... That's kind of the energy he brings, like a player. You know, he played with all these guys in this clubhouse. So that's kind of the vibe he brings is just that laid back player style, player mentality.
