News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now, I'm Dan Schwartzman. Iran downed a U.S. F-15E fighter jet and a search and rescue operation is underway. CBS News is reporting that U.S. forces have rescued one crew member that's citing U.S. officials. The search show is on for the second member of the two-person crew. This would mark the first downing of a U.S. jet in the now 35-day war in Iran. President Trump has threatened to go after Iran's infrastructure by destroying bridges and electric power plants as the U.S. bombed Iran's tallest bridge. Trump says the U.S. military hasn't even started destroying what's left in Iran, warning on social media overnight that Iran's leadership, quote, knows what has to be done and has to be done fast.
A French container ship and a Japanese-owned tanker have exited the Strait of Hormuz in what appears to be the first known transit through the waterway by a vessel linked to Western Europe since the war in Iran started. The Islamic Republic has tightened its grip over Hormuz, allowing some ships from friendly nations to move along a pre-approved route, but has threatened to strike vessels allied to the U.S. or Israel. Cuba's government said the pardons were a humanitarian gesture in connection with Holy Week. U.S. job growth rebounded in March and the unemployment rate fell, suggesting the labor market was stabilizing as the Iran war began. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 175,000 last month, the most since the end of 2024, led by health care employment.
Meanwhile, the unemployment rate fell to 4.3%. President Trump is preparing to release a fiscal year 2027 budget plan that will frame his party's midterm election message around a massive defense buildup. Bloomberg's Amy Morris reports from Washington.
The Trump budget won't address entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare, and it's not expected to include 10-year deficit projections, which means the White House won't offer a full picture of how it projects the president's policies adding to future deficits.
