Snow and dangerously bitter cold have begun to spread from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Lakes as a massive winter storm pushes toward the U.S. northeast, disrupting travel and threatening power outages for much of the nation. The storm is expected to span nearly 1,500 miles, bringing heavy snow, crippling ice and sub-zero wind chill to some of the biggest U.S. cities. Airlines have already canceled more than 6,200 flights. Amtrak has pulled dozens of trips from its schedule. New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani told residents of the nation's largest city that snow removal efforts have been prepared and that a decision will be made at 12 noon Sunday as to whether schools will be open Monday or if it will be a virtual learning day.

Here in the northeast, the hazards from this storm are going to be mounting. Most maps are showing a solid 6 to 12 inch snowfall from D.C. to New York City and on up to Boston. And there will definitely be cities and towns, especially west of 95, that will get more, perhaps a foot and a half. On the other side of 95, closer to the coast, some locations may stop at 6 or so, and then followed by a sleet and ice storm. And as for the timing, the snow will likely start around midnight Saturday night in the D.C.-Baltimore area, give or take, and it will likely be snowing in New York City and suburbs by the time you get up on Sunday and reach up to Boston towards lunchtime on Sunday. Now, the snow will fall heavily.
It will accumulate rapidly. If there is to be any sleet or freezing rain mixing in, it will most likely be south of I-78 in New Jersey Sunday night. Otherwise, this storm won't start winding down until sunup Monday in D.C., but linger even later in New York City and most of the day for Boston.
