What business advantages does the UK offer?
The UK stands apart as a place to do business, not because of one advantage, but many working together. Over £10 trillion in capital, four of the world's top universities, a 10-year industrial strategy in action, its stability with dynamism, global reach with local depth. It all adds up to greater growth. Find out more at business.gov.uk slash growth.
News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Monica Ricks. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio struck a much more peaceful tone in Munich this morning than remarks made by Vice President J.D. Vance last year. But he did push President Trump's global vision for renewal and restoration in Europe. He talked to Bloomberg's editor-in-chief, John McElwaith, about it.
What is it that we fight for? What is it that binds us together? And ultimately, it's the fact that we are both heirs to the same civilization. And it's a great civilization. And it's one we should be proud of. It's one that's contributed extraordinarily to the world. And it's one, frankly, upon which America is built.
Rubio also praised Ukraine's grit on the battlefield in that exclusive interview and underscored Washington's determination to bring Kiev's war with Russia to an end.
I think that both sides are suffering tremendous damage and we'd like to see the war come to an end. It's a senseless war. In our view, the president believes that very deeply. He believes the war would have never happened had he been president at the time.
The U.S. is expected to continue potential peace talks between Ukraine and Russia Tuesday in Switzerland. Meantime, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says Russia is suffering, quote, crazy losses.
For Ukraine to stay strong in this fight, to stay strong in this fight, One, we have to realize the Russians are not winning this. As you said, they lost 65,000 people in December and in January. They are not winning this.
Rutte's comments come as Western officials weigh relations with China, which increased its support for Russia's war in Ukraine last year and is likely to deepen that cooperation this year. Prime Minister Keir Starmer also spoke at the Munich Security Conference as says Britain's no longer the country that voted for Brexit.
We're 10 years on from Brexit.
How does Marco Rubio view America's role in Europe?
We are not the Britain of the Brexit years. We're a Britain that wants to work with the EU even more closely.
He's vowed to build a closer relationship with the European Union and bolster its ties with the U.S., even as other European allies warn of possible breaks from the U.S. amid rising tensions. Iran said to be making widespread arrests across the country this weekend, a month after it launched a nationwide crackdown on protests. Activists say security forces have been using street cameras and surveillance and drone footage to track people who participated. Students, doctors, lawyers, teachers, actors, even athletes have been rounded up at home and work, adding to the thousands of people who've already been arrested. More than 7,000 have died. The U.S. military says it carried out another deadly strike on a suspected drug vessel in the Caribbean.
U.S. Southern Command confirms it was traveling along a known narco route and engaging in narco trafficking operations. The strike killed three people. It's the latest in a string of dozens of attacks carried out in the region since early September. Government shutdowns hit the Department of Homeland Security now as the White House and Democrats continue working on a funding bill that includes ICE reforms. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
We've drawn a hard line in the sand on behalf of the American people, and we're not going to allow the Congress to cross it. ICE needs to be dramatically reformed.
Senate Democrats voted to block a funding bill earlier this week. Among other things, they want ICE agents to stop wearing masks and have a warrant signed by a judge to make any arrests. Federal authorities have opened a criminal probe into an ICE shooting in Minneapolis. Bloomberg's Amy Morris reports from Washington.
