News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Nathan Hager. The U.S. blockade of Venezuelan oil continues even after the ouster of Nicolas Maduro. This morning, the Trump administration said the Coast Guard carried out back-to-back seizures of so-called Dark Fleet vessels. One, a Russia flagship formerly known as Bella One, seized in the North Atlantic. The other, the Sofia, taken in Caribbean waters. Bloomberg's Simon Casey has more on the Bellas.
This was a tanker that was chased away from the coast of Venezuela last month by U.S. ships when it was trying to dock in Venezuela. As I say, it's a sanctioned vessel. President Trump in recent weeks has implemented this blockade on Venezuela to try to halt exports of oil from the country via sanctioned tankers, part of putting pressure on the regime.
Bloomberg's Simon Casey and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on X that the blockade remains in effect and only lawful energy commerce as determined by the U.S. will be permitted. Energy Secretary Chris Wright says the U.S. will control sales of Venezuela's oil indefinitely and use the proceeds to rebuild the nation's economy.
We're going to let the oil flow, sell that market to United States refineries and to around the world to bring better oil supplies, but have those sales done by the U.S. government and deposited into accounts controlled by the U.S.
government. Energy Secretary Chris Wright spoke at a Goldman Sachs conference in Miami. Last night, President Trump posted online that Venezuela will turn over up to 50 million barrels worth as much as $2.8 billion. President Trump's ramping up his rhetoric against NATO as concern builds in Europe over his plans for Greenland. In a Truth Social post this morning, the president said Russia and China have no fear of NATO without the U.S., He says he doubts the alliance would be there for the U.S. if needed. All this as the White House says President Trump has not ruled out military force to take over Denmark's Arctic island. We get more from Bloomberg's Sarah Sciolin in Copenhagen.
Last year, there was a poll saying that 85 percent of the Greenlanders did not want to become American. That could obviously have changed. But the sentiment from Greenland right now is that they want the Americans to back off.
Bloomberg's Sarah Sciolin reports the Danish and Greenlandic governments are pushing for a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The Wall Street Journal reports he's told lawmakers that President Trump wants to buy Greenland. Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin told Bloomberg News this morning a U.S. attack on the island would be a red line for Europe. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says his team is moving on to the tough issues of territory and nuclear control now that they've reached a breakthrough on security guarantees with U.S. negotiators in Paris.
