What's going on? Welcome to Jays Talk Plus Friday edition trade deadline weekend edition. No, you guys have a long weekend. We do not. The Blue Jays will be taking on the St. Louis Cardinals at Rogers Center. And then Monday is the Major League Baseball trade deadline. So we will be with you 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day. Obviously, Sportsnet will have coverage all the way through the deadline with Blair and Barker. A lot to happen. Not much happening yet. Yet, we keep getting those little tiny deals like Logan Ohopi and Chase Silseth. Jake Rogers, who'd been DFA, got traded for an unranked prospect yesterday. AJ Minter got dealt to the Twins for a pair of prospects who have name value but are not off to great.
you know, pro career starts and things like that. Nothing, nothing big cooking yet. So there'll be a lot to speculate on today. Nothing to sink our teeth into later in the show. We will have Jorge Castillo of ESPN. We'll talk about the two New York teams, one of which is seller, one of which is a clear buyer. We will also talk some MLB labor stuff with Jorge. John Marossi will join us at 11 o'clock. Ben Shulman will join us a little later to get us set for the Jay's Cardinals, which begins at 7.07. Tonight, down at Rogers Center, Dylan Cease taking on Kyle Leahy. Later in that series, we'll see the major league debut of Quinn Matthews. Let's talk some pitching. And this is... This will be deadline adjacent, but...
I just want to sink my teeth into some starting pitching stuff. There are a lot of interesting matchups today. There are a lot of interesting guys throwing today who may or may not be making their last start for their respective teams. Nobody better to talk pitching with than Nick Pollock, founder of Pitcherless and five-time SWA award winner. He joins us now. Nick, how are we doing this morning? Oh, fantastic. How are you doing? Thanks for having me. Pretty good, man. It's good over here. Like, deadline time's fun. I preferred it last year in 2022 and the 23 when the Blue Jays were buyers. They are not, presumably this time. So that part's a little bit of a bummer. But otherwise, I'm good, man.
I mean, look, here's the thing. The Jays could do some really fun things at the deadline right now. And I think what's most interesting is this weekend where you have a lot of these teams who are a couple games back from the wild card. They are about 10%, maybe up to 30% chance of making the playoffs, according to fan graphs. And based on this weekend series, we could see teams all of a sudden become massive sellers, massive buyers. And I'm so curious what the Blue Jays specifically are going to do because they do have a piece or two that they can move to. at the deadline and really improve their 2027, 2028 chances. Or they could maybe sweep this weekend, feel like they're right back into it, and then make some other interesting moves.
There's a lot of things that could happen this weekend. It's a really fun time in baseball. It's a really fun time.
And I think... Most scenarios have the Jays selling come Monday, but we'll see how it goes. Nick, I'm curious. In your area of expertise, you are analyzing pitchers, and analyzing pitchers works the same for fantasy as it does for actual pitching, and there is overlap in terms of trade deadline value and fantasy value. So what are you looking for as someone who is going to look at the shifts in which team a player is on, who gets a new opportunity, things like that, with a fantasy lens? Like, what matters to you other than, like, oh, Tarek Skubal's on a slightly better team. Maybe he gets one more win that he wouldn't have gotten in Detroit. What's front of mind for you as a fantasy guy on deadline week?
absolutely and what's kind of funny is that i initially got into this really just being completely on the fantasy side and then i realized that what i do i just only talk about starting bitching i just talk about them as players and then say at the end okay cool here's the fantasy lens of it so because what i do is just like do i think this guy is good do i think that what he's doing is what he's going to be doing in the future
