And John, your investigations with the Sunday Times have been a huge part of this uh story over the past while. Um so d before we get to what's happening today, tell me first. Daniel Kinnihan has been talking i in the last few days.
What has he been saying?
Well he started uh releasing recordings and and granting, I suppose, mini interviews um from his the detention centre where he's been s uh was being held uh to uh a podcaster, uh a UK-based podcaster. So he he has at various times said various things. Uh in previous weeks he suggested that if something happens to him that That he he wouldn't be to blame. In other words, if it was foul play or so some ill became of him, he wouldn't have done that himself or it wasn't an accident. Yesterday, there was another message released. I think it had been uh recorded maybe on Thursday or Friday, and that stated that he was looking indeed looking forward to coming home to Ireland, that he'd come. A long way since he left the Oliver Barne Flats where he grew up.
He said he was very reflective and he was he sounded very brooding in terms of some of the comments that he made. But he, of course, he certainly in in intimated that he was blaming or that he was holding the media reporting around him as being partly responsible about for this, for the public's perspective. perception of him and he made other remarks. Okay, so they're self mythologizing essentially, yeah.
Okay. Now he's landing a tea town today on the government jet. It's a very high security operation. You're writing today. That he is a marked man. So there are obviously there there's a c concern for the government keeping him in custody, but on the other side of that, what are the dangers to him?
Well, for a start, I think it's really important that the c people under the public understand that cartel is a huge organization. People in Ireland tend to view it through the prism of looking at a couple of members of the Kennan family and their associates, but there's lots of other people. It's a huge sprawling network of people and organizations that stretches across the globe. So some of these people would be deeply concerned about Daniel Kennan for lots of different reasons. They would be concerned about the type of information. he has. They were concerned about his knowledge of its finances and who are some of the key players in minding, investing and uh attending to its finances and investments across the world.
So so you're saying there'd be these people would be concerned that d Daniel Kinahan flips and does a deal, yeah?
That's what P possibly um because of the type of charge and the sentences that those charges have attracted in the past. Um there's also an issue with people that uh there's been quite a lot of people killed in the republic and uh they are well connected people. They have uh extended associates and networks of people connected to them that would have an interest in Daniel Kennan also uh the cartel. Tell also killed uh a paramilitary during the feud. Uh, and I know uh from my own research that uh distant Republicans and the various iterations of the IRA have long memories about this type of activity. So that's another issue in it. And then you just have uh he has an awful lot of information on the activities of, say, Iranian intelligence.
how they're shipping oil to China and other parts of the world and ha more to the point how that money system operates and the type of uh transactions that occur. I so there's l it there really is a wide, varied peo number of people that are interested in him.
