05 May 2026

Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.031 - 9.705 Jonathan Hood

Welcome to the Busted Open Podcast. I'm Jonathan Hood. And on tonight's show for Busted Open After Dark, we talk about Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu, the contract signing.

0

Chapter 2: What happens during the contract signing between Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu?

9.785 - 42.188 Jonathan Hood

It was wild. Well, we're talking about it right here on the Busted Open Podcast. This is the Busted Open Podcast. I want to talk to you a little bit about the status, the state of WWE heading into Backlash. So before we dive in, I do have some concerns. The number one thing is WWE is leaning into smaller cards with more impact on storytelling.

0

42.843 - 67.076 Jonathan Hood

However, this backlash card features only five matches with a one-hour broadcast window on ESPN, and the rest is going to be on ESPN and the plus platform for ESPN. There's a lot of commercials. There's a lot of ads, but not enough in-ring substance for me. The men and women work hard to be able to get on these cards.

0

67.156 - 91.691 Jonathan Hood

I know that everyone cannot be on a PLA for WWE, but here we are again with just five matches on this backlash card. And I always think about you and I as fans, what we're paying for the tickets, the parking, the travel. I think that we deserve a lot more than just long entrances and short matches. I think what we want as fans is substance in the ring and not just presentation.

0

92.072 - 111.674 Jonathan Hood

It is amazing what is attractive now to a lot of wrestling fans on social media like YouTube. There are thousands and thousands of people that love to see the entrances just of any WWE superstar. But what about inside the ring, the substance inside the ring? If we're going to invest in a lot of Raws and SmackDowns, you know what I would say?

Chapter 3: What are Jonathan Hood's concerns about WWE's current storytelling approach?

111.694 - 134.255 Jonathan Hood

I would say that once you get to the PLE, I think we need to be able to have a lot more stake than the sizzle when it comes to these PLEs. And we're getting the opposite of it. The card includes top-tier talent like Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins and Braun Breaker and Jacob Batu and EL Sky and Asuka. These performers, you know that they're going to deliver.

0

134.936 - 156.424 Jonathan Hood

But the question is, for me, will they get enough time to tell their compelling stories in the ring? If we spend this much time On Busted Open, calling into all the shows and listening to all the shows, investing in all the stuff that WWE has, can we get a return on the investment in the ring? We're not getting enough of that, I think, as of late under TKO.

0

156.764 - 182.217 Jonathan Hood

That's the biggest question I have going into Saturday. The one thing for sure is I know that the women and men in WWE, they're going to bust their ass to be able to entertain us. But how much time will they be given? Under the TKO group holdings banner, WWE business and the model feels a lot different. Five matches, to me, only three really feel significant.

Chapter 4: How does WWE's card for Backlash compare to past events?

182.585 - 201.117 Jonathan Hood

Out of the five? And it's just not enough. So there's a sense that fans may be getting less for their money. And I understand from the Triple H booking philosophy, Triple H favors long-term, slow-burn storytelling. I'm totally fine with that. It's a far cry from how Vince McMahon was doing things toward the end. I have no problem...

0

201.687 - 221.929 Jonathan Hood

the way that Triple H is doing things as far as his storytelling is concerned. That approach can work, but it doesn't always translate to satisfying the live events. Fans attending shows want to have an immediate payoff. I compare that to AEW with All Elite Wrestling, where you get longer matches, bigger cards, more in-ring action.

0

222.53 - 239.25 Jonathan Hood

And the analogy is like AEW feels like you go out for dinner and you come home with three more full plates of food You get the substance, you get the sizzle and the steak. It's like, no, no, no, I'm good. And they just continue to bring food to you. You're like, no, I'm good. That's how AEW does things.

0

239.27 - 259.079 Jonathan Hood

But at least if nothing else, you're getting the bang for your buck and then some with all the action that you get. And I feel like it's a different business model from what WWE is doing as of late under TKO. So my bottom line is WWE storytelling is strong. There's no question about that, but it could do more. We said this at the end of the Vince McMahon era.

0

259.119 - 278.772 Jonathan Hood

We're saying this right now, that WWE can do a lot more. Five matches of Backlash in Tampa. Imagine you have a ticket to that. I'm sure some that are listening right now say, yeah, I'm going, J-Hood. Yeah, I'm going to check it out. Yes. You are going, but you deserve more than just five matches, and actually three that I think is going to be really good.

279.353 - 301.084 Jonathan Hood

The fans, like you and I, have invested time, money, and loyalty. In this era, less is not more. I'm here to tell you. It's not. Less is not more. It may be more on Raw and SmackDown, but when it comes to PLE, it leaves a lot to be desired. WWE has got to be able to deliver more matches, more time, and more substance, especially on those premium live events.

301.199 - 326.768 Jonathan Hood

As I keep you company here on Busted Open After Dark on SiriusXM Channel 156 in the SiriusXM app, Jonathan Hood with you. We need to talk about what is going on with what happened on Monday Night Raw. And again, if you are leaving the arena in Omaha and if you saw it live, we want to get your reaction. 877-344-4893 is our phone number. So let's go right to the end.

326.832 - 355.422 Jonathan Hood

And that is what we saw from Roman Reigns and Jacob Batu. They had the contract signing. You know what's interesting about the contract signing is that I heard chants for Jacob Batu and I heard chants for Roman Reigns. And I found that very interesting. I'm going to ask a question I asked on the Sunday edition of Busted Open. And I host that with Justin LaVar every Sunday from 9 to noon Eastern.

355.756 - 390.098 Jonathan Hood

And I will ask you here on Busted Open After Dark, who's the baby face and who's the heel? I hear cheers for both guys, which I find very compelling. The story's laid out as Roman Reigns told... And is controlling things around here. I find it how Roman wants everyone to know that he's the OTC and he's part of now the first family and he's the guy.

Chapter 5: Who is the babyface and who is the heel in the Reigns vs. Fatu storyline?

1355.363 - 1371.239 Jonathan Hood

He just entertains. Even with him, like, okay, I know that can be clownish. I know that I do a lot of antics, but even me, my facial expression changes when I'm in the ring. I like that. Because it shows me something different from these guys. But I just want to point that out for Logan Paul.

0

1371.259 - 1395.003 Jonathan Hood

I understand Austin Theory in there against Joe Hendry because it gave an opportunity for Joe Hendry to bounce around Austin Theory a little bit. But I thought that that was very interesting that I saw tonight. Logan Paul watching Seth Rollins and Seth Rollins being a completely different character. Catch the full three hours of Busted Open every day of the week at 9 a.m.
