Sunday. So looking forward to it. It's the All-Ireland Senior Football Final between Kerry and Mayo. And it's really beginning to reach a climax of excitement. But who will bring home Sam? Well, Henry McKean travelled to Kerry going for their 40th All-Ireland. And he visited the parish of Nagale GAA Club in Tralee and sent this report.
I'm Laura Ryan and I play here at Naguail and we're on the home pitch today here in Naguail, in Killeen.
What is the All-Ireland final matchup and why does it matter to Kerry?
How are you feeling? It's the countdown now, playing Mayo in this All-Ireland senior football final.
Yeah, we're very excited. We have all the kids here in Kerry jerseys today. Kerry flags all around the town, absolutely buzzing. We're just very excited now for Sunday, can't wait for it.
How do you think it will go?
I'm hoping it will go in Kerry's favour anyway. I'd be a good Kerry supporter myself.
You can feel that buzz, you can feel that anticipation. The Kingdom are really behind their team. Will you be bringing it home again?
I hope so, absolutely. We'll have a good homecoming again, please God, in the heart of the town in Tralee, like we did last year.
Why does it mean so much to the people of Kerry?
I suppose we're all real Kerry football heads, do you know? There's loads of clubs here in Kerry, in the country, in the town. Loads of competition between all the clubs, so it's something that really unites everyone together when we're all supporting Kerry.
Hi, my name is Roy Lynch, I'm 18, and I'm from Austin Stacks. I'm coaching the Kool Camps in Nagoya this week. It's fantastic, it means everything to the people around the place. There's a great buzz around the town and the county.
How are Na Gaeil club members and kids preparing for the Kerry vs Mayo final?
It just means everything, the sense of community, and it brings everybody together. It's just fantastic, it gives everybody a great buzz. For example, my granddad now would be 94, and he was next to us at the game, and he was delighted, hopping up and down. So it really brings everybody together, and it's fantastic. It means everything to everyone. If we were to get over the line now on Sunday for number 40, it'd be just great. How much pride does it bring Kerry? It's very hard to put into words to be honest, the amount of pride that the football puts every corner of the county. You go down, I was in Waterford coaching last week now and it's just, people just love Kerry. It just means everything. They're heroes like the Davies, Potty, Shawnee, even Joe and Dylan now and Armin who will be in my own club, Stacks.
They're just heroes around the place and they're not just normal people, they're giants among men here in Kerry and it's just fantastic. So are they gods? We won't go there for now. We'll see how they go on Sunday. But definitely, definitely. We're so grateful to them. We're beyond grateful to them. It's just so good. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You talk about living in places in whatever, America, Australia, people immigrating or whatever, you just really cannot beat the GAA. It's just great. How excited are you?
Really excited. Kerry will win. Kerry will win.
What do you love about GAA?
I like the way it tackles. The goals. The points.
And I noticed you've got some signatures on your jersey. Is that the Kerry team?
Yes.
When you grow up, do you want to play for Kerry?
Maybe. Yes.
Why does winning Sam Maguire mean so much to the local Kerry community?
Yes.
And who's going to win?
Probably Kerry.
Who's your favourite player?
Probably David O'Connor.
And he's a member of your club?
Yeah.
So you must be very proud of him.
Yeah. I think I might be going up to Croke Park, so I'm quite excited.
Hi, I'm Conor Cavanagh. I'm chairman of Nagale CLG. It's a fantastic time in County Kerry. The month of July is the height of the championship. All of our kids are here, extremely excited. Dermot O'Connor is playing for Kerry, lined out in the semi-final. He's lined out all year and we're hoping for a victory on Sunday. We're never overconfident. I think we just want to go there and give of our best. And we're confident that if we give it our best on the day, that hopefully we'll be a few points better than Mayo.
