Why should I make a business decision before a podcast decision?
When was the last time you made a business decision before you made a podcast decision? Or maybe even while you were trying to make a podcast decision? I'm not talking about what should I record this week or should I do an interview or would this be better if I put it on YouTube? I mean an actual decision for your podcast that was influenced by your business. Because the more I coach podcasters, the more convinced I become that podcasts don't struggle because people are making bad content. specifically when it comes to business podcasts. They struggle because they're making content decisions before they're making business decisions. And I know this because I've spent the last couple of months leading the first official cohort of podcasting for business.
Now, when I created this program, I always knew that I'd be talking about business just as much as I'd be talking about podcasting. That was the entire point. A podcast should not exist separately from your business, so it wouldn't make sense to coach one without the other. But something really interesting started to happen, especially during our one on one sessions. No matter what someone came to me with, whether it was planning content, refining their messaging, looking at analytics, figuring out why their podcast wasn't creating the results they wanted, we almost always found ourselves talking about the business behind the podcast. We'd start with a podcast question, but we'd end up making a business decision.
And the more those conversations unfolded, the more I realized that the biggest breakthroughs were not necessarily coming from choosing a better episode topic or tweaking a call to action. Yes, those things are important, but they were impacted from understanding where the business was headed first and then making a podcast decision that supported that direction. That has only strengthened my belief that your Your podcast should not be leading your business. It should be intentionally supporting it and your business should be leading your podcast. Hey y'all, I'm Hayley Gaffin, and you're listening to Clocking In, the podcast where we help podcasters and business owners grow their show and their brand with strategy, clarity, and confidence.
Now let's clock in and get to work. Friends, before we dive in, I want to take a second to welcome anyone who is listening for the very first time. I'm Hayley Gaffin, founder of Gaffin Creative, where we help podcasters leverage their podcast for their business. I have a feeling this episode might introduce this podcast to some new listeners. And if that's you, I genuinely think you have started in the right place, especially if you're a business owner who is using your podcast or wants to use your podcast to grow your business. Around here, we do talk about podcasting, but more importantly, we talk about how podcasting fits inside your business. Because I don't believe your podcast exists on its own.
It influences your marketing and your authority and your sales process and your client experience. When those pieces start to work together, your podcast will become so much more than a weekly piece of content.
What did I learn from leading the first cohort of Podcasting for Business?
I believe it can become one of your most valuable business assets. Over the last couple of months, I've had the opportunity to lead the first official round of podcasting for business. And it has been incredibly rewarding to watch these business owners begin thinking about their podcast differently. When I built this program, I intentionally designed it around the idea that your podcast does not exist separately from your business. That's why we spend just as much time talking about offers, your positioning, your visibility, your marketing, and your long-term business goals as we do episode strategy, analytics, and content planning. Because the reality is I can't recommend the right podcast strategy until I understand the business it's meant to support.
So that is why some of the most valuable conversations we have had have not started with a content calendar. We've talked about content calendars, yes, but we've started with questions like where do you want your business to be six months from now?
