DSPN back from South Africa, courtesy of HBO Max. Long flight yesterday, back at work this morning, and our good old mate Chris Jones, Times, Times Online, rugbypass.com, joining us again. We've got a lot to talk about. Over the next couple of days, I'll give you, if you're a Changing Sheds member, the chance to... have these. I bought back a program, Chris, from each of the test matches. Collector's item, even though the All Blacks didn't win, I'm sure that there is somebody out there who has got a whole lot of these somewhere in a wardrobe who would quite like one of these programs because you don't get them. I mean, we used to get these at every sports event, didn't we, Chris? You don't get them anymore.
It's all online now. All online. Something to actually hold and show you were there.
I was there. That's right. And over the next few days, people, obviously, we'll go through some of the memories and the stories and so forth. But it ain't over. And that's why we're talking to Chris. And it's been a couple of weeks since we touched base. And I've got lots of questions for you, mate, because we head into Baltimore. We've got the team to be announced in the next couple of days. And you've had a couple of days to reflect on the three tests played. And I'm really interested, what have you learned from watching those games about both teams?
Well, it's become patently obvious that South Africa are as far down their development road as we feared they were. And you guys are still starting off. I mean, which is understandable under a new coach. But boy, have there been some good signs as well as some worrying signs for you guys a year out from the World Cup. But a year out from the World Cup, we can all hope and pray that South Africa are peaking. But we say this every time they go on the pitch and they keep on peaking more than any other team has ever peaked before.
Look, it's entirely fair. And the thing that impressed me the most is I believe that they have got levels to come. Just in case anyone thought they're on the wane, just in case anyone thought their players are getting old, they've got players to come back still and they will replace those players. Russie said at the end of the presser after test number three, Chris, and he was lavish in his praise of Dave Rennie and where the All Blacks are at at the moment. But he actually said it, didn't he? He said, look, I've had this team for eight years. And it means a lot because it's like a football coach. You go back to Bob Paisley's for Liverpool. You go back to Alex Ferguson for United. You go back to these guys that had their teams for 15, for 20 years.
And the continuity that you established and the succession planning that you established. And that's what I gained from watching that team over three tests. That I believe they've got plenty more to come and the rest of the world has got a hell of a gap still to close.
There are areas of that South African team that opposition would look to exploit.
