This is the DSPN.
We are live. Welcome to it. As we celebrate and embrace and start to debate the first All Blacks selection of 2026. You'll see it up on your screen shortly. Let me run you through the team. De Groot, Taylor, Newell, Lord and Derry are the locks. A brand new...
What are the key highlights of Dave Rennie's first All Blacks team?
Loose forward combination with Adi Savia, captain, moving to eight. Peter Lachai at six. Jacobson rewarded for his super rugby form at seven. Roygaard and Love. Ruben Love, of course. Everyone in the country wants that guy. Keys to the car, he's been given it. Midfield combination, I think, as expected. Geordie Barrett and Quinn Tupai. The wing is Springer. Am I not surprised? Caleb Clarke on the left wing. Will Jordan starting at 14. Damien McKenzie then starts as well. He's at 15. We've got two newbies on the bench, and that is Xavier Noumea, There is your 23. A couple of quick observations before we welcome in Nigel Yeldon. As I said, Jordan on the right wing. Love gets the keys to the car. Two new debutants.
Artie moves position. New locking combo. 15 of the 23 played the Super Rugby final. Nine Hurricanes and six Chiefs. And I'm also going to digress, ladies and gentlemen.
What pressure does Ruben Love face as the new No. 10?
Going back to England at Twickenham in November last year, we had 13 of the names that I've just given you started against England, 19 of the 23 that played against England. are still in the squad. And the other four that did play against England are actually listed as injured and unavailable. So essentially a lot of the same names there. He has been the voice of New Zealand rugby across Radio Sport and Newstalk ZB for well over a decade, maybe 15 years. You can still hear him across Sky Sport, First 15 Rugby, Opiki NPC. He works for us at MediaWorks. He's a superb analyst and we invite Nigel Yeldon to join us. We'll cross to Jamie live in Christchurch shortly. Nigel, there's your team. Surprises? What are they for you?
I think the obvious one is the fact that you've got Will Jordan back out to the wing and Damian McKenzie at fullback. I think that's probably one that does stand out. So, you know, that tells me that Dave Rennie is probably just being a little bit judicious with how he introduces players. either Morby or Fenerha Norfolk. In this case, he's going to get a run off the bench. It's quite interesting in terms of we're so used to seeing a 10 or 15 on the bench and to not see it, to see a specialist centre in Billy Proctor and a specialist wing in Fenerha Norfolk on the bench is a little bit interesting to see in jerseys number 22 and 23. But when you have a look at that team, He said he'd pick on form. There's some guys that have got some good form from Super Rugby, and I know some people will look at the Chiefs' last outing, and we know you're only as good as your last performance for some of them, but in terms of the quality of what they have put out on the field throughout the course of the year, that's a really good team that Dave Rennie has named for the first one.
Ruben Love is obviously going to be a major topic of conversation, so let's tick him off straight away. Combining with Roy Gard, he's got Geordie on the outside there at 12. So there's your axis, Nigel. And I think a lot of us predicted that we actually thought this would happen.
That's the combo right there.
How does the new coaching group plan to utilize player strengths?
And you can actually add it to a quartet because you've got Artie Sarvera at 8. And we often talk about 8, 9, 10. Well, the 12 has become such an... an important component of the All Blacks. We saw what Geordie did for the Hurricanes, and I expect that you will see him do very similar for the All Blacks. Again, he's got all the skills you want. It takes that little bit of pressure off. And it means that, you know, depending on how you want to play the game, you know, you can utilise the size of Geordie Barrett. You can utilise the distribution of Geordie Barrett. You can utilise... Look, I expect to see Quinn to Pirate 13 running very similar lines to what he ran for the Chiefs at 12. And that's going to set up a lot of second-phase play where you can utilise Love and Barrett again.
