He's a fair bit been thrown at them. So I think we've made some good shifts. It's nice to have another week in preparation to cement some things and build towards Ireland.
Looking ahead to Ireland, what do you think needs to improve against a team like that?
I mean, they're a quality side. They've got a lot of, I guess, strong connections. A lot of guys who play an enormous amount of footy together over the last few years. They're very well coached, so they'll be well prepared. They're very skillful with their forwards. They've got a really good short passing game. They'll ask lots of questions of us there at NACP. Yeah, I mean, defensively, their ability to fill the field. Yeah, they're a good side. We've got to be patient in our effort to break them down.
You head to the Fortress. The last time you would have been there as an international coach, 2022 with Wallabies. What's it going to be like for you going back there again? Obviously different colours.
Yeah, it's always nice going to Eden Park. It'd be nice having a lot of supporters cheering for us. Yeah, it's been a fortress, but... What's happened in the past counts for little. It's about us making sure we get our prep right and mindset right to play against an Irish side who last time I met two of this country they won a series.
Do you think there'll be an extra edge in camp this week? Have you sensed an extra edge given what happened the last time the Irish came here?
We haven't talked about it at this stage. It's obviously very early in the week. This morning it was more about a review and tidying up a few things from the weekend. This afternoon we start previewing and installing for Ireland. I know that will come up. There's a healthy amount of respect for the Irish and well aware of their ability and they'll come and genuinely believe they can beat us.
You've got Rico in camp. Who's he covering for? Who's under injury clouds?
Leroy come off obviously with a bit of an AC and Fihi's had a bit of a shoulder injury as well which gives us a bit of outside back cover.
What weaknesses does Rennie identify in Ireland’s game that could hurt New Zealand?
Just back on some of the comments around the TMO from Saturday's test. Is there too much from the TMO at the moment, or does World Rugby need to have a serious look at the role of the TMO going forward?
Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have made that comment, eh? Oh, look, I think probably what's important is when you have a team of four, you have a group of guys who work a lot together and trust each other, and so I think that's the challenge. You've got to... Next from Australia, you've got an Englishman, you've got a Frenchman, and then you've got a Welshman in the box. I don't think those guys would have spent an enormous amount of time working together. But you want the right decisions. So if they're going to come in, it's because something's happened. I probably won't say much more other than There was a lot of breaks in play because there was a lot of dialogue and it seemed to take a long time to get to the right decision.
So a bit of work to be done there.
David, when you want to play quick, those breaks in play don't typically help?
No, not ideally. I mean, we did score off a quick tap at one stage where they had three guys down on the ground, but we previewed that. And we felt that if we could play at a tempo, they'd probably try and go down and slow the game down. And they managed to do it at a line-out time. They constantly would arrive at a line-out and then close the gap. And then a ref would have to come in and push them back. And by that stage, we've lost the opportunity to play at tempo. So we'll provide that feedback. What's your reading of the Irish staff for a couple of testings this week?
