How is Ardie Savea's performance being affected by the team's strategy?
And we've had so many comments from people saying, I just can't wait for Watto to get on here and start talking about the All Blacks. So the floor is yours to start with. We've had a good couple of days to let it all sink in, mate.
Okay, well, you know, we said last week I hadn't had the team named. And when I saw the team being named, I thought, oh, here we go again. We've got our second best first five playing at fullback. We've got our best fullback playing on the wing. We've got our best second five playing at centre. We've got our fourth best seven starting at seven. We've got our best seven starting at six. And we've got our best seven sort of starting – in fact, our best eight was starting at six. our best eight was starting at seven. And it was all a bit confusing. I thought, oh, OK, we're just trying to get the best players on the park. Then I heard the Dave Rennie press conference where he said, oh, we've got the two best fullbacks playing at the back.
And I thought, OK, are we just trying to get the best players on the field? And then he said about rewarding form. And I thought, well, hang on a minute. We've got Josh Morby, Fihi Whaianga-Norfolk, both record try scorers in Super Rugby, neither got a start. So that was a bit concerning for me. Look, the defensive side of it was obviously the biggest concern for me. I came out on this show initially and was not a big fan of Tana Rumanga getting that job. I said it at the time that if you just took his CV and attached our names to it or a lesser or a non-All Blacks name to it, you probably wouldn't have appointed him as a defence coach. Now, do I write him off after one performance? No, I don't. But it was concerning the number of points we conceded, particularly early on.
Look, delighted Ruben Love got a start. I thought he played well. You know, I think, you know, I'd still like to see these guys at times be a bit more measured and kick a little bit more at times. But what surprised me was how little the French kicked, considering how much of a weakness that has been for us. And I just wonder if the French had another opportunity. They might have just kicked a little bit more. The biggest frustration for me is why the hell are we taking Cam Roy guide at all? Why do we need to substitute these guys, mate? Play the full 80 minutes, man. He didn't look like he was out on his feet. You know, France is still in the contest. What is the need to substitute guys? It just makes no sense to me whatsoever.
I think there is optimism in that answer somewhere, John. I'm just writing it down. I think I'm trying to find optimism, but he said he was optimistic.
