The Devlin Sports Podcast Network. OK, we're rolling into another test week for the All Blacks against Italy this weekend in Wellington. Here in Auckland, though, and it's pretty cold and windy today, pretty good preparation for what's expected to be pretty similar conditions down at Henry Stadium on Saturday evening. Today we're talking to All Black assistant coach Jason Ryan and Wallace Satiri.
Here they are. Jason, first of all, I guess, does it feel a little bit different, obviously, to test under your belt now heading into week two? Have your nerves disappeared a little bit?
Jason Ryan 0:43
Oh look, you're always, before every test match, you have that excitement I guess and there's a little bit of unknown of where the boys are at and I think we transferred a lot of good skill execution work in different areas. We plied it pretty well in the first test so it's definitely good to get the first one under the belt for the year, definitely.
Looking forward to rolling out a few changes this week, potentially get a few boys out there that haven't had a run so far?
Jason Ryan 1:13
Yeah, potentially. I think that we've got good trust in our whole squad here.

What are the current challenges facing the All Blacks this test week?

Jason Ryan 1:20
Yeah, so look, we'll pick the best team.
What did you make of the speed around the ruck last week, just some of that ball getting cleared at crazy paces with crazy percentages?
Jason Ryan 1:32
Yeah it was quick, it was quick. We put a bit of work into that and probably just our ball carry using footwork and it's something that Renz has driven extremely hard around being brilliant at basics and that's one part of it that we thought we got pretty good and we'll have to be better this week. The stadium, I guess under the roof, you know what the conditions are. Wellington's a little bit different, so how we use the ball and how we play the game could be different this week.
Jamie Wall 2:00
Coach, significantly less kicking in that game than we've seen in usual test matches. Obviously you're not a backs coach, but how does that changing game plan factor into what you're looking after?
Jason Ryan 2:13
Yeah, I think both teams used the ball, didn't they? Both teams shifted the ball. I think we want to play at speed and we want to use the athletes that we've got in their own point of difference so they can flourish in the game and be themselves. That's what's got them here, so keep playing and keep backing themselves. It's a point of difference for them, so making sure that they do that.
Jamie Wall 2:34
Talked to Sam Dowery about it yesterday. He was really enjoying getting around the field. But in terms of like a set piece point of view, are you concerned at all that perhaps the extra mileage that they're getting around the field is going to affect that?
Jason Ryan 2:48
No, not really. I think every test match is different. There wasn't a lot of long scrums in that game and neither was their mauls or defending mauls. So that's probably why there was so much speed. But you've got to be able to do both and we'll put a lot of work into our set piece this week. Italy are phenomenal, especially their scrum.
Jamie Wall 3:08
And were you happy with the discipline shown by the Obelix on the weekend, the penalty count?

How does Jason Ryan interpret Dave Rennie's coaching philosophy?

Jason Ryan 3:11
Yeah, a little bit over-eager a couple of times. I think that there's a couple of moments that could have been costly that we will review and make sure that we don't walk past those. But the boys are pretty... pretty aware of that.
Wallace Sotiri 3:26
Darryl also spoke about defence being an issue. Have the boys been put through their paces in that regard?
Jason Ryan 3:30
There's always areas of your game that needs to be tidied up. I think, you know, there's a little bit of cohesion lacked in some parts of that, but we'll put a lot of work into that this week and we'll tidy that up. There's always something to work on, you know.
We're going to talk to Wallace, sorry, Shirley. How impressive have you been with the way he sort of bounced back from that head knock a couple of weeks ago, which is quite a nasty looking incident?
Jason Ryan 3:55
Yeah, it was about four weeks ago, about a month now. So he's been exceptional when he's got through his gym work and it wasn't nice, was it?
