With the new academic calendar here, Iowa football and basketball have been configurating classroom game plans for the upcoming seasons. Hockey football is moving on without quarterback Mark Ranowski while basketball is exploring options and combinations in replacing All American Guard Bennett Sturts. Football embarked on its fall camp a little more than a week ago. Basketball just concluded two months of organized drills. and strength and conditioning prior to a short break. Second year coach Ben McCullum, who guided the Hawks to twenty-four wins, their first Elite Eight birth since nineteen eighty-seven and first sweet sixteen since nineteen ninety nine, signed a contract extension this summer and got in a lot of fishing, agreeing that life for Iowa basketball has changed.
Yeah, I mean, uh you just get a little more attention for your program, which certainly helps in the recruiting process. Um, you know, for for me personally it's uh I actually have a summer 'cause I I don't I don't have the move, which makes it really nice. Um so so no, it's it's been good. You know, I I think recruiting's there there's a buzz around it. Our guys believe in what we're doing just because they saw the results of it and and um now hopefully we can kind of continue some on on some of
Uh today ended uh a string of uh twenty twenty five workouts uh since June. Uh what have you learned about this new group uh life after Bennett Sturts?
Yeah, I mean we got a group that really wants to work. Um we got a good defensive group. Uh we got a lot of talent, a lot of depth with that talent, which sometimes can be a good thing, sometimes it's a bad thing. But um um they they work really hard, you know, it and and uh they wanna be good. So, you know, I I'll be curious to see how it all pans out once the season starts.
Of course everybody uh in the Iowa fan base uh wants to talk about the recruits and the transfer portal and NIL. Uh the guys that are coming back, the mainstays like a Cam Mano, like a Cale Combs, like Isaiah, uh they they look like they've taken on nice leadership roles.
Yeah, they've done a good job this this summer. Um, you know, I think they um they know the expectations as to what we want and and then it's just you know, for them they need to make sure they meet those expectations so they can be good leaders for the rest of the group. Um it certainly expedites the learning curve. Uh and uh you know it's it's certainly helped us this summer.

Coach uh the second year guys uh in particular, Tate Sage, uh I love Tate since the first day I watched him play and uh you you gotta you gotta be so thankful you have that type of aggression coming back, not only with him, but a couple of other six eight, six nine guys.
Yeah, for sure. No, I mean we got a lot of length that can shoot and and anytime you got length that can shoot, you give yourself a chance. Um now it's just okay, so you know, late in games, where do we go? Who do we go to? Is it is it by committee a little bit and and trying to piece that together? But you know, we've got more shooting this year, we've got more length. Um, you know, we'll see if it's see if it helps us win more games.
And out of the newcomer, as watching uh the Storm Lake native, Jaden Kuhn, uh Ethan, uh the young man from Washington's got a lot of skills. What do you like about those two guys?
Uh you know, they're clean slate. You know, you can you can you can work with them quite a bit. Obviously very athletic, great energy and um you know, uh be great for the future here at uh University of Iowa.
