Seems like we repeat this line annually. A very worthy recipient of this year's University of Iowa and Iowa Farm Bureau, America Needs Farmers ANF Wall of Honor. The newest member, former Hawkeye Unanimous All American, Outland Trophy winner, and NFL All Pro Brandon Scheriff. The ANF Wall of Honor recognizes Hawkeyes who embody the work ethic, character, and determination of Iowa farmers. Those values were instilled at an early age for Brandon Sheriff, who grew up in Denison in Crawford County, surrounded by agriculture. Sheriff cherished everyone. Every moment he could spend on his mom's family farm near Holstein.
You know, I loved going to the farm, uh, with my uncles and my cousins, whether it was
How did growing up on a farm near Holstein shape Brandon’s work ethic and football mindset?
Um, moving pigs around, you know, uh Taking cattle wherever they needed to go, hopping in the tractor with my cousins, um, racing the four wheeler, checking the uh the moisture on the bales, um doing all that kind of stuff. I know uh my uncles would probably get tired of me sometimes and they'd say just go just go drive around. So I'd go drive around and just just get lost in the in on the four wheeler and it was it was some of the most fun I ever had growing up. So anytime they asked to go back there, um I would I would love to go back there and help them out whenever I could.
And you've said publicly that uh those experienced help shape your uh Your playing career not only at Iowa, but uh your successful run in the National Football League and and really uh help shape your approach to life. How so?
Yeah, you know, um I always say this, but um farmers, you gotta f no matter what, you gotta figure out a way to get something done. Um no I mean you obviously you're gonna ha you're gonna have helpers but those animals the depend on you and crops too. You got you putting the crops in, you gotta take them out. You know what I mean? So you gotta find a way to get it done. And um if you had a bad day the day before the the same problems right there, you know what I mean?
What specific farm chores and experiences does Brandon recall that taught him problem‑solving skills?
So you gotta come back with a good attitude and and attack the day. So I think I think just growing up on the farm and watching my uncles overcome obstacles, watching, you know, um whoever whoever I've been associated with on the farm, there's something always is always gonna go wrong, but you gotta figure out how to fix that problem right there and find a solution. Then you either got animals out or you know, what whatever. So it's always about um I would say finding a finding a solution fast or, you know, coming coming each day uh ready to ready to work.
Hey, the head of the household on the farm is the head coach. Uh you're you're the starting uh lineman. Uh you got you you got the game plan in front of you. You gotta go out and implement it.
That's right, absolutely.
You know, I look at that list of uh the thirteen previous winners, uh I'm gonna ask you what you see, but when I see names like uh the first winner, Jared Devries, Casey Wigman uh and Jared Devries the first couple of years. From the galleries to the Dallas Clarks, the Greenways, the Yondas, Matt Kroll, the Campman. Micah Hyde, Tony Moiyaki, just an incredible uh uh uh Hall of Fame in many areas, but certainly uh w with the uh uh America Needs Farmers uh uh uh plot. It's uh w what what features, what qualities uh do you do you see do you compare in all of those previous winners with yourself, uh Brandon?
I mean, what you just named off those those guys are that's an incredible group of guys and I've been uh fortunate enough to hang around some of them.
