Hey everyone, welcome back to the Fitness Education Online Podcast. I'm your host Bex, and today we have Joy Flint, a gym owner, coach, mentor, IFBB competitor, and someone who has been in this industry for nearly four decades. We're talking about what's changed, what's been lost, and how Joy has built a life, not just a business, out of her passion. So a huge welcome to you, Joy. How are you today? Hey.
Joy Flint 0:28
I am awesome. Thank you very much. And I'm hoping that your audience does not need a translator. That's the main thing. I'll try and speak really clearly.
Bex 0:38
No, you're absolutely fine. I know this is going to be an awesome conversation. So yeah, they'll just be lapping up all the amazing information that you've got to talk to them about. But I'm going to hand it over to you. Let the audience know who you are and a little bit more about you and what you do and yeah, why you're here today.
Joy Flint 0:56
So I am very privileged, first of all, to be able to even do this because I think having a platform like this for people in the fitness industry is so important because I think that we can get so wrapped up in being quite insular and not having many people to speak to and being afraid to speak to other people in the business because a lot of people feel jealousy or We just don't have anywhere to go anymore. So thank you for allowing me to have a voice. So, yeah, my name is Joy, as you heard. And I have been teaching in the industry since I was 14. And I am just about to have my 56th birthday. 56, 52nd birthday, which is a little bit scary because I still feel as though I'm 14. And I always had this dream that one day I would own my gym.
Joy Flint 1:46
And I had a vision. I had a really strong vision. I had other visions in my life that I would have an open top car with a red open top car with a dog that had flappy ears. haven't quite got there yet. But I would have a swimming pool in my back garden, which we moved to Ashley and we've got that and we would have a gym. And I'm very much a believer that even from that age, I work towards that without even realising that that potential could actually be there. So every day I walk in and yeah, like everybody, there's It's still a job at the end of the day, but I am very lucky to be able to do what I do. And I never shy away from showing gratitude in any way, shape or form that I can for myself and to others around me.
Joy Flint 2:34
And I think that that's really important.
Bex 2:37
Oh, I love that. Well, I can imagine that mindset and that perspective has hugely contributed to being able to achieve everything you have and get to where you are today. And yeah, I think it's something that can be so overlooked is that attitude of gratitude, we'll call it. But it's so amazing to hear that you've been teaching since you were 14. That is amazing. So what was that like? And where did that drive even come from at that age?
Joy Flint 3:01
I've always been into sports. So a little bit about my background. So my dad was a bank manager and we got moved around a lot, just like military people, which I'm now with. So we moved from area to area and I was actually a ballet dancer and I had this dream of being a choreographer. So that was my thing that I was going towards. I was extremely good at dancing and I was getting to the point where I was on stage quite a bit. And then my dad got a posting and we got moved away to a very remote place where there was no dancing. It destroyed me.

But my

mum and dad were fantastic. They found lots of other opportunities. So I went into horse riding, gymnastics and things like that. Never got me the same as... ballet but I then got into involved in lots of other sports and that's just the way that I was becoming my mum and dad have always been active as well so I've never had a childhood with a family that's been sitting down and sedate it's always been an active even walking holidays as a child which I hated. And then we got moved again to the Western Isles of Scotland, which is extremely remote.
