What is Adam Roberts’ new novel *Food Person* about and why is it a perfect summer read?
Hi, Keri. Hi, Sonia. Today, we're talking to Adam Roberts, also known as the Amateur Gourmet. If you've ever been a fan of food blogging, then you know the Amateur Gourmet because he has been blogging for, I think, 20 years. He's one of the OG bloggers. food bloggers. He shares recipes, cookbook recs, what he's eating for dinner, what he's hosting at his fabulous dinner parties. He does this all now on a sub stack. But he also recently just came out with a novel Food Person, which is an incredibly fun page turner that takes an inside look into food media and ghostwriting a cookbook.
Yeah, and it's actually a perfect book for summer reading. If you're just someone who loves food, you'll recognize a lot of the things that he shouts out in his book.
Adam's such a fun guest. He's someone who just really understands what it means to be a home cook. He shared his go-to cookbooks, recipes that he's making for friends, desserts that are foolproof. He has some really phenomenal hosting tips. I learned a lot. I think other people will learn a lot.
I completely agree. Other thing, Sonia, is that he really gave some advice about hosting that I'm taking to heart. And he had some great tips that I'm for sure going to take into my summer hosting.
So stay tuned to hear a conversation with Adam Roberts. Welcome to Food Friends, a podcast inspiring home cooks to try new dishes in the kitchen by sharing trusted recipes, tips, and friendship. Hi, I'm Sonia.
And I'm Carrie. We met in Los Angeles over 15 years ago as personal chefs and haven't stopped talking about food since. We're so glad you're here.
Hi, Carrie. Hi, Adam.
Hi. Hi.
So great to have you here.
Yes, I am a fan of your podcast, and apparently I've met Sonia before in real life, and I remember it very well.
And so do I. So memorable. I'm actually surprised you remember me. So we're so happy to have you here.
Thanks for having me.
Adam, we love to start off with a really difficult question, which is, what did you eat for lunch today? Or what are you going to eat for lunch today?
This sounds a little bit like my podcast, which was lunch therapy. I had a hummus bowl with cauliflower in it from this place called... It's so funny. I order from them so much, I'm blanking on the name because I don't even look at the name anymore. It's like a hummus bowl place in Brooklyn that's owned by the people that own Miss Ada in Fort Greene, which is this great... Mediterranean restaurant. And so it had hummus and it had like roasted cauliflower. So it was sort of healthy, but I had pita bread and I listened to Barbra Streisand's memoir while I ate it.
Oh, wow. So there's two great synchronicities. One, you did have a podcast called Lunch Therapy, which was wonderful. And you would really get into sort of the emotions, the stories behind what people... We won't do that with your lunch today.
We're just going to... I don't even know what it says about me.
But also a fun coincidence because we just recently shared a story where Carrie had catered for Barbra Streisand. What? Yeah. Yes.
What did you... Well, I just want to listen to everything you have to say about this for the next hour.
Well, that's a story for another day. But I will say she has an incredible garden. And so I was invited to come and harvest food from her garden. And then I cooked a dinner party that I actually got to be a guest at too. So it was pretty amazing. Wow. Whoa.
It's so funny. I've been listening to her memoir while I eat for the past what feels like years. And every time I turn it on, Alexa, oh, I just said her name. Sorry. She'll be like, you have one day and 14 hours left in this memoir. Like, it's so long.
Amazing. I need to listen.
Which cookbooks does Adam consider essential for beginners and seasoned home cooks?
Okay, well, first of all, we want to congratulate you on your book, Food Person, your new novel, which is such a fun read. It has so many surprising twists and turns. It's definitely to me like the perfect vacation book. And anyone who cares even remotely about food or food media or cooking or friendship, I don't want to spoil anything. But I feel like it delivers on all those counts.
